Orchids

Let us keep on remembering.

Sorry for late update, people!
-----
Yiernoshi, Christine, Victoria, and Jeanine stared at the box in Kah Yunn's hand.

"Open...that box?"

Kah Yunn nodded briskly. She turned to Fixit.

"Is there a room where we can train?"

Fixit nodded.

"I'll take you there."
-----
The six of them stepped out of the elevator at level B6.

"If that's all, I'll return to my repair work."

Fixit left, leaving the four of them alone with Kah Yunn.

She turned to them.

"This era is very different from the one you guys came from ten years ago. If you can't ignite the flames of the ring and open the boxes, you will not survive. Even if you can opent the box by some beginner's luck, it's meaningless if you don't have an attack plan."

"First, you must understand the rings. There are two ways to maniplulate the power of the ring. One is to use the power in the rings directly. The second is to use the rings to open the boxes. With the former, you can have such a weapon."

She raised the gun-like device on her arm, and fired.

A huge flame came out, and blasted a giant hole in the wall of the training room.

"Next, the boxes."

She held up a box she had taken from her cloak.

"Think of a box as a tool that can transform the flames of the rings into other functions and motions. If you think of flames as electrical energy, then the boxes are like electrical appliances. There are many types with many forms and fuctions."

She clicked open two boxes. Out came the giant rabbit from before, as well as the balloon-thing she had sent out as a scout.

"Basically, every box must first be charged with the flames before it can do anything. Once the flame dies, what it does also stops."

The indigo flame encasing the rabbit faded, and it fell to the ground, asleep.

"After the box is opened, there are some that are surrounded by the flames. There are also types that absorb an opponent's flame to become more powerful."

"Now, for some real practice. I heard that Christine and Yiernoshi have already managed to light the rings."

Christine grinned.

"But of course!"

"Show me."

Christine clenched her fist with the ring.

"Turn my determination...into flame..."

Nothing happened.

Kah Yunn tutted.

"Most likely you produced the flame by luck during the emergency. If you rely on that kind of lousy emergency power in battle, you'll-"

"There!"

Christine's ring had burst into red flame.

"Cool! Christine's flame is red!"

Victoria pulled out her own Carbonara Ring.

"So I wear it like this?"

She looked at it.

"So...turn your determination into flame, huh? You mean like this?"

She stared at the ring, frowning briefly.

A violet flame flared into existence on Victoria's finger.

"Wow! Cool!"

Christine scowled.

"How come you do it so easily?"

Kah Yunn looked in surprise.

Impossible! Most people need at least 30 hours to reach this stage! she thought. Is this the power of the Carbonara Rings?

She shook her head.

No! The rings do not take sides. This is...their resolution!

She turned back to the four.

"Jeanine! What about you?"

Jeanine dug around in her pockets, coming up with her Carbonara Ring.

"Turn my determination into flame...?"

She closed her eyes, and concentrated.

A few moments later, a flare of green flame appeared.

"Eep! The ring is burning!"

"Then...Yiernoshi! You're the last one. Show me your flame."

Yiernoshi looked at Kah Yunn.

"Eh..actually, I had no idea how I did it the last time..."

Kah Yunn scowled, and hit Yiernoshi, sending her flying into the wall.

"You pathetic child!"

Sam hopped down from her perch.

"Let me try."

She looked at Yiernoshi.

"What were you doing at the time you ignoted the Ring?"

"I...I was only protecting Jeanine..."

"Good answer! Don't you have people you want to protect now?"

Yiernoshi closed her eyes.

I want to protect...everyone!

The Ring sparkled, and suddenly, was engulfed in a roaring orange flame.

Kah Yunn stepped forward.

"Alright, now to open the box."

Christine stepped forward.

"Let me try."

She plunged her red flame into the box.

Nothing happened.

Victoria reached over.

"Let me try. I put it in like this, right?"

She inserted her blue flame.

Still, nothing happened.

Kah Yunn sighed.

"Most likely, the type did not match."

"Type?"

"There are seven types of flames that the rings can emit. The Storm, Sky, Sun, Lightning, Rain, Mist, and Cloud. These are the seven classifications. Similarly, the boxes are classified according to these seven attributes. The atributes of the ring and box must match for it to open. Sort of like a lock and key."

Yiernoshi frowned thoughtfully.

"That means that this box is neither a storm-type nor rain-type, right?"

Kah Yunn nodded.

"My mist ring cannot open it either."

Victoria handed the box to Jeanine.

"Here, you try."

Jeanine stuck her green crackling flame into the box.

Nothing happened.

Yiernoshi took the box.

"What happens if my flame can't open it either?"

"No need to worry. Among all the flames, the Sky is the only one which can open all boxes."

Yiernoshi looked amazed. She clicked her orange flame into the indentation.

Light began to shine from within the box.

It's crumbling, thought Kah Yunn. It's a storage box!

The box burst into smithereens. On Yiernoshi's palm now lay a ring.

Kah Yunn looked at it, and snatched it up.

"What is that?"

"My master's long-lost ring. It's cursed."
-----
That night, after dinner, everyone was resting in the dining room.

Fixit burst into the room.

"We've intercepted a distress signal!"
